Sony Ericsson W300i Rocks the House

Abstract:

As noted by almost every reviewer out there, the Sony Ericsson W300i (my version Cingular) is great value for money. It is low-end entry into their phones Sony Walkman, and as such, offers good quality music (MP3 or FM station), a excellent phone service and a lot of extras that make a business person semi-pro in me very happy. There are a couple of small errors in design – especially the color, oddly shaped keys that many users have and problems with the fact that the handsfree cable works as a radio antenna so you can not listen to the radio without the headset connected – but overall, the Sony Ericsson W300i offers excellent value for a low-end music phone.

Characteristics:

The W300i is Sony’s latest entry in the list of Walkman music phones, and unlike others, is aimed at cell market average. In our case, We got the Ericsson with the activation of a calling plan with Cingular two years, and the price could not be beat – a buy-one-get-one deal that cost me $ 20 for two phones. My teenage daughter has one, and I have the other. They are not exactly all-in-one phone, but include enough features to keep a demanding user in adolescents and a happy mother business. These include high-end handsets, MP3 player, FM radio, VGA camera, instant messaging capabilities, capacity WAP, easy to read display, Wireless Bluetooth, memory expansion slot, video capture, data transfer with GPRS and EDGE, and PC synchronization. That is a boatload of features for a workhorse, your bargain.

Styling

The W300i is a starting point of the other Walkman phones in terms of style. The case of the cover and rounded lines give a bit of a robust, without compromising the clean curves, almost futuristic and detail. The front screen is only slightly below the center of the phone, and text and orange backlight is surprisingly comfortable to view in contrast to the usual blue-white majority cell phone screens. The phone is available in bright White and Black Shadow. Both chose the black shadow, and I really like both the black matte finish and silver accents. The only “flash” on the phone is bright orange Walkman logo at the bottom of the front and orange switch on the left side of the cell.

Ergonomics and Usability

At 4.2 ounces, the W300i is easy and the shape makes it a very comfortable fit in the hand. It’s a little narrower than a deck of cards – narrow enough to curl your fingers over, but large enough for comfortable gaming with both hands and text messaging.

Although most respondents have had a problem with the design of Sony for the numeric keypad on the W300i Ericsson, I find it very comfortable and easy use. The flat, round buttons overlap and set flush with the surface of the phone, but it is very easy to feel where one ends and the next begins. I have not pressed after accidentally pressed the wrong number or two numbers at once. What was a little harder to get used to the key was dedicated “For”, and the fact the C button does not return to a porous screen.

My biggest problem with the usability of the phone, however, is with the battery cover. The illustrations user’s manual that looks simple – put your thumb on the battery cover, slide the bottom of the phone and remove the lid. Doing so is a different story. On three different phones, the battery cover was almost impossible to open. Since that’s where the memory is, it becomes a problem.

Music Player

Since I actually chose the Sony over other Cingular phones specifically for the music player, the music quality is important for me. The Walkman MP3 player offers surprisingly good sound quality through the headphones (which are much better quality than those usually included with the cells) or through the speaker. The controls are easy to use and intuitive, and easy to configure and transfer songs and playlists via a special USB cable or through the wireless interface. The one irritation is the need for specialized USB cable to fit the FastPort on the phone, and that is not included with the phone.

The phone itself is only about 20MBs internal memory, but you need a memory card up to 512 MB which can store much more information tons (and songs!) on the phone. There are, however, the added advantage of complimentary music almost limitless capacity of your FM radio. You can tune up to 20 presets and listen well to the headset or via speakerphone. If someone calls while you’re listening, the music just continues to play in the background, allowing you to take the call.

Camera

The camera was the second reason I chose the Sony Ericsson. I do not need high-resolution high quality photos for my purposes, it is a good thing, since the VGA camera is not able to take them. It does offer a pretty decent quality for what it is, however, with bright colors and very good lighting. My daughter, by contrast, is having a wonderful time with her, used to capture snapshots of drive time and easily send their friends and their email account for your online publication with only few clicks.

You also get to capture video and a suite of software to fool with your photos for more fun.

Messaging

The Sony Ericsson W300i gives you a range of capabilities with respect to messaging. His clients include instant messaging can handle AIM, MSN and YIM. You have the option of text messaging, messaging Image and multimedia messaging and voice messaging.

Connectivity

The phone is Bluetooth capable and includes a WAP browser. You can connect to your PC via a USB cable or infrared. Manage e-mail and upload directly, and can be used as a modem with a USB cable.

Battery

After years of phone use to be applied almost every day – including my phone last emergency temporary replacement was literally full load the dead with only a couple of calls in the two-hour trip to my mother – the battery in the Sony is beyond impressive. You will receive 10 hours of talk time and up to two weeks of standby time.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a phone with good quality music at a reasonable price, the Sony Ericsson W300i is definitely worth a look.
